Back in 1981, Donruss was fairly new to manufacturing sports cards. Before the 80′s, they were mostly known for producing various entertainment products. Golf cards have always been a hit or miss product within the industry. Donruss released Golf Stars back in 1981 and was one of the first stand alone golf products available to collectors. Each box contains 36 wax packs with 7 cards per pack. The set consists of the top 60 money makers of 1980. There’re also a handful of SP’s that were printed in smaller quantities. 1981 Golf Stars is home to many rookie cards of players such as: Jack Nicklaus, Raymond Floyd, Hale Irwin, and Tom Kite. Boxes can be picked up for around $130.00 online.
Golf cards either work or they bomb. Tiger Woods dominates the golf card market, along with other legends like Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, and Bobby Jones. Upper Deck produced golf products up until a few years ago, but then decided to stop. I’d like to see Donruss come back with a golf product, maybe something like Prime Cuts but for golf. Would anyone buy it? Probably not.
