USFL Relics?

The United States Football League (USFL) only played three seasons, 1983-1985, but during that time it produced a few of the best players to ever step onto the gridiron: Steve Young, Jim Kelly, Reggie White, and Herschel Walker.  What surprises me is that in an age of collecting where its possible to pull an authentic DNA relic of George Washington, there are no relic cards containing elements of the USFL.  I would think for those die-hard Young, Kelly, White, and Walker fans those cards would be a big hit.  There has to be some game-used relics from that long lost organization.

  1. I’ve never thought about that, but you are absolutely right, USFL sets have been very popular through the years, should be nice to see a USFL legends set or at least an insert…..Good point here….!!!!

  2. Great observation. I am not much of a football collector, but Even I think this is a cool idea.

  3. Glad to see that someone else appreciates USFL memorabilia, especially since it was way ahead of its time in comparison to the NFL. Imagine a team in the NFL today called the “Gamblers” or “Gunslingers” — the media would have a frenzy!

The collectibles are difficult to find as they are spread out across the nation, and with so many teams hurting financially toward the end of the 1984 & 1985 seasons (let alone the 1986 fall training camps), merchandise production became limited. I liked your idea of a “USFL Legends” set as that would spark interest into other leagues which existed as “professional” football: WFL, Arena, XFL, etc.
