Flashback Product of the Week: 1999 UD SP Top Prospects

This wasn’t the first time Upper Deck released their SP Top Prospects set, but I find it one of the more entertaining and better designed versions.  I still can’t wrap my head around the concept that Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams could have ended up playing for the Phillies if he hadn’t decided to go play football for the Saints.  Imagine looking in the outfield and instead of seeing Victorino, Ibanez, or Pence, you see Ricky Williams.  I know.  Its a total mind blower.

The 1999 UD SP Top Prospects set consists of 126 cards.  At the time of its release, everyone was after J.D. Drew.  He was the “must have” prospect of the day.  Other notable prospects in this set include Rick Ankiel, Pat Burrell, and Drew Henson.  Henson’s card was pulled because of some issue that had to do with his college eligibility, but a majority of them made their way onto the secondary market.  This is a minor league product, and you won’t find MLB logos here.  On average you will find two autographs per box.  Boxes can be found for $40.00.

One of the best things about this product is the design.  Upper Deck left a lot of room on most of the cards for players to sign their name.  I wish the athletes would have explored the blank area more because there was a ton of room for them to write all kinds of inscriptions.
