2012-2013 Panini Prizm Basketball Box Break & Review

Design: Photobucket

12-13 Panini Prizm looks like a cross between Bowman Chrome and Topps Finest.  The 300-card base set and its parallels are more on the Bowman Chrome side where as the inserts strongly remind me of something you would see in Topps Finest.  The only gripe I have are the white boxes on the autographs.

The gold Prizm parallels are commanding big prices on the secondary market.  Each are numbered to just 10.  NBA fans are nuts!

Price: Photobucket

Boxes are currently selling for $100.00.

“Hit” Quality: Photobucket

Each box promises (2) autographs, (2) Prizms, and (2) inserts.  The Prizms (refractors) seem to be more plentiful than what the box states.  This is one of those products geared towards set collectors and people willing to spend big bucks on low numbered parallels.  Big “hits” will be pretty remote.

I pulled the following:

  • Iman Shumpert
  • E’Twaun Moore

  • Chandler Parsons Prizm #216
  • Jared Sullinger Prizm #258
  • Cory Higgins Prizm #273
  • Larry Bird Most Valuable Players Prizm #14

  • Julius Erving Most Valuable Players #16
  • Kurt Rambis Finalist #17

Overall: Photobucket

Overall, I give 12-13 Panini Prizm Basketball 3 fireballs out of 5 (1=poor & 5=perfect).  Panini doesn’t have the track record with “chrome-like” products unlike Topps.  I think its a good start.  Next time I think they should include more parallels.  Products like this thrive on parallels.  Panini plans to release Prizm Football in February.  I don’t see it beating out Topps Chrome.

Upon taking the plastic wrap off my box, I noticed that the image of Kobe Bryant is separate from the box itself.  The picture is about as thick as a base card and resembles a box topper.  I tried pulling it off… but that didn’t end well.
