Flashback Product of the Week: 1982 Topps K-Mart

Over the years Topps has teamed-up with various retailers by producing exclusive sets made just for those specific stores.  This was something very dominant throughout the 1980’s.  Topps did this with Toys “R” Us, Revco, and even K-Mart.  They still issue special cards for retailers today, but on the most part its exclusive parallels that can only be found in retail boxes sold in those stores.

I couldn’t tell you the last time I was in a K-Mart.  It has to be at least ten years ago.  Topps mass produced a 44-card set specially made to celebrate K-Mart’s 20th Anniversary back in 1982.  The set features NL and AL MVP’s from 1962 to 1981.  Topps decided to go with the card-on-card design for this set.  It may be a cheap way of designing a set, but I like seeing cards pictured on other cards.  Card #27 features an image of a Fred Lynn 1975 Topps card that differs from the actual ’75 Topps card that was originally released.  Fred Lynn shares his 1975 Topps card with three other players, so Topps designed a single version just with him for the 1982 K-Mart set.  Topps did the same thing with Maury Wills.  Wills never had a card in the 1962 Topps set, so they made one.  Topps also used this Wills image in their 1975 set.

These were issued in complete 44-card sets and carry very little value today.  They were not a “Limited Edition” like the pack states on the front.  A complete set can be picked-up for under $5.00.
