Throughout the summer, I attend a lot of minor league games. Especially on nights they’re giving out bobbleheads. I actually find myself more connected to these minor league products than anything else. Its fun to see teams like the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, Harrisburg Senators, and Reading Fightin Phils featured on cardboard. A lot of minor league teams issue team sets to be sold in their gift shops. Those sets still have collectible appeal, but nothing like stuff Topps issues.
Its true that many players in these minor league sets have cards in older products. Some of those older products have been out for awhile, and their cards will most likely be more desirable. A first year Bowman Chrome autograph from 2014 probably will be in higher demand than a card of the same player from a later minor league product. That’s just how it is. Now it all depends on the rarity of each too.
MiLB teams have some of the craziest names and logos. Its fun to see them all on vintage looking 1966 card stock. 2015 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball features a 225-card set. The last (25) cards are short prints. Each box should yield (2) autographs and (1) relic, plus a handful of parallels and inserts. Overall the cards look pretty good, except sticker autographs are the norm. I don’t believe they could get away with this amount of stickers for the MLB version of Heritage.
I’d have to say that my favorite cards are the Looming Legacy Autographs. These do not feature young prospects at all. Instead its the total opposite. This 9-card set features veterans in their minor league uniforms. The set includes Andruw Jones, Cliff Floyd, Chipper Jones, Juan Gonzalez, John Smoltz, Nomar Garciaparra, Omar Vizquel, Rondell White, and Vladimir Guerrero. I like that these use original photos too. I want to see more baseball legends in their minor league uniforms. TRISTAR did that with Obak, but that brand has been dead for years.
