Back From The 2012 National Sports Collectors Convention

The 2012 National Sports Collectors Convention has come to an end.  It was packed with cards, memorabilia, promos, autograph guests, and much much more.

This was the 4th National I’ve attended.  I think it was one of the best.  The promos are one of the main reasons why I go.  Most of my time was spent in the corporate area with Topps, Panini, Upper Deck, and Sportkings.  The lines are well worth the wait.  Throughout the week I will be blogging about the boxes I broke and the promos I received.  I got some really good stuff including a few 1/1’s and a cut signature.  When I got home this afternoon, I spent about six hours getting everything organized for the week.

The National is one of those events collectors should experience at least once.  Its more than just a show.  You can interact directly with manufacturers, and you get to see a lot of collectors like yourself.  Some people may not like waiting in line for the promos, but that’s where you can meet some great people.

I broke something like six or so boxes.  When I got home, Panini had sent two more for Sports Card Info to review.  The cardboard just won’t stop 🙂  Take a look at some of the photos.  For those that attended, I hope you all had a great time.  More stuff coming soon.

Panini’s booth was one of the busiest.  Collectors were lining up two hours before the wrapper redemption program started.

On Friday, Washington Nationals pitching prospect Ryan Tatusko stopped by the Panini booth to sign autographs.  Ryan has checked out Sports Card Info before and last year I did an interview with him.  You can check out his blog here.

The Topps booth was another busy area, especially right when the show opened.  Collectors were looking for Gypsy Queen minis and Bowman Platinum Blue parallel sets.  The Topps Mini boxes seemed to be popular too.

This was as close as I could get to Panini’s VIP party.  In order to get invited, you had to purchase $6,500.00 worth of Panini products.

Harper & Darvish Promos Available At Brian Kong’s Booth During The ’12 NSCC

The National Sports Collectors Convention offers up a wide variety of artwork for you to browse through.  Artists such as Brian Kong are usually setup.  Its always a good idea to stop by their booths, not only to check out their work, but many times they have some promo cards to giveaway while supplies last.

Brian Kong will have Bryce Harper and Yu Darvish specially made cards available at his booth.  They are each limited to 250 copies each.

Benchwarmer’s 2012 NSCC Plans & Promos

Photobucket

Benchwarmer products reconfirm one of the oldest marketing strategies in the book – sex sells.  Are their models gorgeous?  Absolutely.  But I for one have never had the urge to go out and buy a box of this stuff.

Anyway, they have created an exclusive new product for the 2012 National Sports Collectors Convention.  2012 National features one 10-card pack per box.  Each card is a “hit”.  Look for Carmen Electra autographs and relics.

Anyone that opens a Benchwarmer product from 2008-present at the Leaf booth will receive a commemorative triple autographed card.

Who knows?  Maybe I’ll meet the future Mrs. Sports Card Info at the Benchwarmer booth 🙂

Historic Autographs ’12 NSCC Redemption Program

Historic Autograph’s “Legends of the Hall” promotion for the collectors is quite simple – any collector that purchases a box of 2012 Historic Autographs Legends of the Hall product at the National will receive a redemption card with the box (at the time of purchase from the show dealer).  The collector will be instructed to bring the unopened box and the redemption card to the Historic Autograph booth, where they will be required to open the box and turn in the redemption card for a second PSA/DNA encapsulated Hall of Fame autograph. This will give those who participate in the program two HOF autographs for the price of one box.  The promotion is limited to the first (250) boxes sold – and all boxes must be opened at the Historic Autograph booth and submit the redemption card received from the show dealer to a Historic Autographs representative.  Limit 3 per person, per day.  The redemption autographs will include some big names such as Tris Speaker, Ted Williams, Fred Clarke, Reggie Jackson and Whitey Ford.  Giveaway autographs will include some of our Ball of Fame baseballs, 2012 Legends of the Hall cards as well as PSA Certified signed items.  For those looking to stop by our booth, it will be located in the Corporate Area next to PSA Pavilion.

The store owners will be offered the chance to win one of Historic Autographs’s fifty custom 6’ tall, free-standing store displays, complete with shelves to display the Historic Autograph’s product line.  Each display will feature a 5’ image of the Big Train Walter Johnson.  For those store owners that are interested in getting a free Historic Autographs Walter Johnson stand-up display, please stop by the Historic Autograph booth and fill out an information card for the daily drawing as Historic Autographs will be giving away displays every day.

Sportkings Adds New ’12 NSCC Promo + Paterno Card Pulled

Photobucket

Sportkings has added an additional element to their 2012 National Sports Collectors Convention Premium Back Redemption Program.  Any collector that spells the word “SPORTKINGS” using the Premium Back base cards found in Series E twenty-five times can have Jared Kelley paint them their own giant art card.  This card will measure 2.5′ x 3.5′ and can be of your favorite Sportking.  Personally, I’d pick Harry Kalas 🙂

Sportkings has also announced they will be pulling the Joe Paterno art card from their Premium Back Redemption Program.  At this time, they didn’t think it would be good to include it due to the Penn State scandal.

Here are some of the other art cards you can obtain by spelling the word “SPORTKINGS” five times.

2012 NSCC Black Swamp Find 4-Card Promo Set

Collectors attending the National Sports Collectors Convention will be able to take home a little piece of The Black Swamp Find with them.  Heritage Auctions is creating a 4-card promo set based on the find.  VIPs will find a complete set inside their packages.  Not planning to come as a VIP.  That’s cool too.  While supplies last general admission attendees will have the chance to grab a few of these cards.

Here is the schedule showing you which cards will be given out to general admission attendees.

  • 8/2 – Connie Mack
  • 8/3 – Honus Wagner
  • 8/4 – Ty Cobb and
  • 8/5 – Cy Young

Panini Teases Us With Their ’12 NSCC Promo Plans

One of my favorite things to report on each year are the promos being given out during the National Sports Collectors Convention.  I love dishing out the details on what they look like and how you can get your hands on them.  The only company I haven’t talked much about is Panini.  Panini has been slowly teasing the public on their promo plans this year.  Its only a matter of days before all of their plans are unveiled, but here is what we know so far.

Panini will be holding an exclusive VIP event for high-rolling collectors.  Collectors that spend at least $6,500.00 at D & A Card World, Blowout Cards, Atlanta Sports Cards, Pittsburgh Wholesale, and/or Marty’s Sports Cards will be invited to this rare event that takes place the night of 8/4.  This event will work much like the Industry Summit distributors attend each year, except this time its for collectors.  On arrival, you will find elusive Black Boxes filled with rare gems, Hall of Famers signing autographs, case battles with ’11-’12 Elite Hockey and ’11-’12 Limited Basketball, plus more.

The following products will earn you “Panini Bucks” towards your invitation:

Baseball

  • 2011 Limited
  • 2011 Prime Cuts
  • 2011 Contenders

NBA

  • 2011-12 Gold Standard
  • 2011-12 Limited
  • 2011-12 Past & Present

NFL

  • 2012 Elite
  • 2012 Prestige
  • 2011 Totally Certified
  • 2011 Playbook
  • 2011 Prime Signatures

NHL

  • 2011-12 Elite
  • 2011-12 Contenders
  • 2011-12 Rookie Anthology

Only 50 collectors will be able to attend this event.  It sounds really cool, but I don’t see 50 people spending $6,500.00.  That’s a lot of cash.  I’d love to get my hands on a ticket to this, but I’m not spending that kind of money.  If any of those dealers are reading this, I’d be more than happy to take one or two of those invitations off your hands 🙂

Panini will also have their regular box break redemption program going on at their booth and it won’t require you to spend $6,500.00.  They haven’t gone too much into detail about it, but it will probably work like in previous years.  Open a 2011 or 2012 product at the Panini booth, and receive a promo pack.

Here are a few previews of the promos:

Panini calls this their “Cracked Ice” design.  It was first featured in the Father’s Day promotion.

Randomly inserted within the ’12 NSCC Panini promo packs will be redemptions for the actual printing plates used to print box covers.
