2022 Topps 582 Montgomery Club – Set #5

Members of the Topps 582 Montgomery Club received Set #5 of their 2022 membership. No autograph. Set #5 is suppose to contain an autograph, and Topps forgot to include them. Not a single Set #5 contained an autograph.

Shortly after numerous complaints, Topps sent this communication out to all club members on 8/5/22:

Dear Topps Customer,

This email is regarding your order for the 2022 582 Montgomery Club Set #5.

Your set #5 has begun shipping, please note the autograph in the set is being distributed at random and sent separately. The autograph will begin shipping in the next week, apologies for any confusion these separate shipments cause.

Thank you again,

The Topps Team

Accidents happen, and communication is key. Looks like the autographs should be on their way soon.

Set #5 consists of (20) cards. It looks like Topps channeled their 1959 baseball design for this one.

  • MacKenzie Gore RC #1
  • Santiago Espinal #2
  • Josh Naylor #3
  • Mike Trout #4
  • Logan Webb #5
  • Taylor Trammell #6
  • Jhoan Durán RC #7
  • Ke’Bryan Hayes #8
  • Jonathan Loaisiga #9

  • Tyler Glasnow #20

I’ve skipped the last few pre-sales Montgomery Club members have had access to. However, I did make sure to secure a box of 2022 Topps Chrome Star Wars Sapphire Edition directly from Topps. I wasn’t going to pass on that.

2022 Topps Finest Flashbacks Baseball, 2021-22 Topps Chrome Sapphire Edition Bundesliga, 2022 Topps 3D Baseball, and 2022 Topps Archives Snapshots Baseball are all online-exclusive products scheduled to be released over the next month. I’m sure Montgomery Club members will get early access to some of them.

Up next to arrive is the 2022 Topps 582 Montgomery Club Factory Set. Series 1 and Series 2 cards all in one set featuring the Topps 582 Montgomery Club foil stamp.

During the Topps Q&A meeting which was held during the National Sports Collectors Convention it was announced that Julio Rodriguez, Bobby Witt, Jr., and Spencer Torkelson will have rookies included within the 2022 Topps 582 Montgomery Club Factory Set.

2021-22 Topps Chrome UEFA Champion’s League Sapphire Edition Available To Montgomery Club Members

Members of the Topps 582 Montgomery Club are able to purchase their allocation of 2021-22 Topps Chrome UEFA Champion’s League Sapphire Edition.

2022 Topps Chrome Sapphire Edition Star Wars Available For 582 Montgomery Club Members

I knew it was coming. I’ve been suggesting it for awhile, and today it arrived. Members of the Topps 582 Montgomery Club got the opportunity to buy (1) box of 2022 Topps Chrome Sapphire Edition Star Wars.

Based on the checklist it consists of Series 1 and Series 2 of the original 1977 Topps Star Wars set.

2022 Topps 582 Montgomery Club – Set #4

Members of the Topps 582 Montgomery Club have received Set #4 of their membership.

This set consists of (20) stickers. Both Wander Franco and Julio Rodriguez have rookies in it.

  • Shohei Ohtani #1
  • Ronald Acuña Jr. #2
  • Cal Ripken Jr. #3
  • Max Scherzer #4
  • Wander Franco RC #5
  • Freddie Freeman #6
  • Roger Clemens #7
  • Vladimir Guerrero Jr. #8
  • Oneil Cruz RC #9
  • Francisco Lindor #10
  • Jose Abreu #11
  • Albert Pujols #12
  • Jose Altuve #13
  • Chipper Jones #14
  • Trevor Story #15
  • Clayton Kershaw #16
  • Julio Rodríguez RC #17
  • Kris Bryant #18
  • Corey Seager #19
  • Carlos Correa #20

Next up is the set members get to vote on. Then the Topps 582 Montgomery Club Factory Set will come last. A lot of people (myself included) were hoping guys like Spencer Torkelson, Bobby Witt Jr., and Julio Rodriguez would have base rookie cards in Series 2. Having a base rookie in both Series 1 and Series 2 automatically means they will have a rookie in the Topps 582 Montgomery Club Factory Set. Instead they have Photo Variation rookies in Series 2 which are not included with the factory set.

Wouldn’t it be cool to see one of these membership sets consist of (20) MLB mascots printed on Topps Chrome Sapphire stock?

I’m still holding out for some unique Sapphire releases that would be fun to see members get first access to – Star Wars and Tennis are good examples.

Montgomery Club Members Are NOT Entitled To Every Topps Online-Exclusive Product First

Members of the Topps 582 Montgomery Club were shocked on Friday, May 6, 2022 when they discovered that 2021 Topps Formula 1 Chrome Sapphire Edition was on sale to the general public. Usually club members get first access to popular online-exclusive products before everyone else for the most part.

Boxes began popping up on Topps’ European sites, and then made their was to the U.S. I was able to add (1) box to my cart, but the Topps website froze for me during the checkout process due to the high volume of users. Some made it through successfully, bots especially, before it sold out.

A box of 2020 Topps Formula 1 Chrome Sapphire Edition originally cost $99. As of right now that same product sells for around $4k. Even with the increased price ($699.99) for the 2021 product you can see why club members are angry they weren’t offered it first like they were last year.

Although a massive surprise, if you read the language on the Topps 582 Montgomery Club website it clearly states “Exclusive Access to Pre-Sale window for select Topps 2022 Online Exclusives including Sapphire, Finest Flashbacks, Ginter X, and Archives Snapshots.” The keyword here is “select”. “Select” does not mean members will get a pre-sale window for every online-exclusive product. It means just the ones Topps chooses. Which products Topps chooses can clearly change from year to year.

Attempt to charge back your membership fee, threaten not to renew your membership next year, and write all of the hate e-mail you want. All the threats in the world aren’t going to make you feel better. 2021 Topps Formula 1 Chrome Sapphire Edition is most likely gone for the $699.99 price, and nothing is going to change that. If you want a box you’ll have to pay more on the secondary market. I would be very surprised if Topps offers members their allocation now that the general public sale is over.

Why wasn’t 2021 Topps Formula 1 Chrome Sapphire Edition one of the “select” products for pre-sale? Rumors and people’s imaginations instantly began to run wild. Maybe some of it will turn out to be true. You can read through it all on the Blowout Forums.

We still have a lot of the year to go. Topps could very easily surprise members with an exclusive product (never produced before) that could make up for 2021 Topps Formula 1 Chrome Sapphire Edition not being offered to club members first. Then again, they don’t have to.

In the end, it is all in the details of the language for the club we signed up for. Plain and simple.

2022 Topps 582 Montgomery Club – Set #3

Set #3 of the 2022 Topps 582 Montgomery Club has arrived, and this one includes a Wander Franco rookie card.

(20) cards make up the set. The design reminds me a lot of 1982 Topps Baseball.

  • Fernando Tatís Jr. #1
  • Greg Maddux #2
  • Luis Robert #3
  • Yordan Alvarez #4
  • Wander Franco RC #5
  • Pete Alonso #6
  • Trea Turner #7
  • Giancarlo Stanton #8
  • J.T. Realmuto #9
  • Byron Buxton #10
  • Ichiro #11
  • Bo Bichette #12
  • Austin Riley #13
  • Jarren Duran RC #14
  • Corbin Burnes #15
  • Derek Jeter #16
  • Paul Goldschmidt #17
  • Rickey Henderson #18
  • Rafael Devers #19
  • Bo Jackson #20

Lets talk about some of the recent pre-sales members have had the opportunity to participate in.

MetaZoo is not something I’m familiar with. But Topps offered members (2) boxes of the new MetaZoo Wilderness product to buy. At $50/box that seemed reasonable to me. You don’t play games with these cards. The game cards are made by another company. MetaZoo cards made by Topps feature characters from the game. Topps did something similar with Pokemon in 2000. Even if it doesn’t turn into being a big flip, I will buy the Sapphire Edition that Topps is suppose to come out with in the 4th quarter later this year. Just as long as it is made available to club members first.

2022 Bowman 1st Edition Baseball I passed on. Members were allowed to buy (2) boxes at $399.99/box. I think a lot of people who passed on 2022 Topps 1st Edition thought they could make up for their mistake by purchasing these. Many more boxes were produced which should be a dead giveaway since you were allowed to buy (2) of them. Sure, some prospect could end up becoming a superstar and passing on a box for $399.99 might seem stupid down the road. But who knows if/when that will happen.

2021 Topps Chrome Update Baseball Sapphire Edition is another one I passed on. Members were allowed to purchase (3) boxes at $149.99/box. Each box guarantees (1) autograph, and (1) parallel #’ed/50 or less. Given that the limit was (3) boxes indicates a lot of product was made. With 2022 products rolling out so many collectors have switched their focus to those, and have had their fill of 2021 products. If you’re looking for a Sapphire product to bust, Topps Chrome Update Baseball is usually the most affordable.

A lot of people (myself included) thought club members would get a shot at 2021-22 Topps UEFA Champions League 1st Edition. Instead Topps offered this to UK residents only.

2022 Topps 582 Montgomery Club – Set #2

Members of the Topps 582 Montgomery Club have received set #2 of their 2022 membership.

The set consists of (20) cards. No Wander Franco rookie card in this one. In fact, no rookies at all. Rest assured one of these sets will have a rookie card of him. Members get to vote as to who they want to see in the final set of the year. I’m sure Wander Franco will receive enough votes to get a rookie card in there.

  • Aaron Judge #1
  • Juan Soto #2
  • Mookie Betts #3
  • Xander Bogaerts #4
  • Vladimir Guerrero Jr. #5
  • Nolan Arenado #6
  • Ronald Acuña Jr. #7
  • Cody Bellinger #8
  • Bryce Harper #9
  • Jacob deGrom #10
  • Ken Griffey Jr. #11
  • Randy Johnson #12
  • Randy Arozarena #13
  • Joey Votto #14
  • Jazz Chisholm #15
  • Dave Winfield #16
  • Christian Yelich #17
  • Salvador Perez #18
  • Willie Mays #19
  • Nolan Ryan #20

Nice design. It reminds me of 1992 Topps Baseball.

According to Topps, 2021 Bowman Heritage Baseball has been delayed indefinitely. Club members were originally suppose to order it on 1/4/22. Then it was pushed back to 1/11/22. It never went on sale. Who knows if we’ll ever see it.

2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball was released on 2/16/22. Montgomery Club members were given the chance to purchase a box of 2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball 1st Edition a day earlier. This was a complete surprise. I didn’t find out about it until nine hours after it was listed for sale. Luckily I was able to snag one for $350. At the time I purchased my box very little was known about it. All we knew was that the set consisted of (330) cards featuring the 1st Edition logo, and autographs were randomly inserted.

During the 2022 Topps Rip Party in Los Angeles some 1st Edition packs were floating around. It didn’t take long before the odds printed on the pack backs began to surface online. Doing some quick calculations it was determined only 7,400 1st Edition boxes have been produced. That’s not a lot. Boxes are also loaded with parallels too. You aren’t guaranteed an autograph in every box, but the autograph checklist is strong including Wander Franco. Autographs have parallels as well.

I’ve come to the conclusion whenever Topps offers a product that is a new variation of a popular brand, just buy it. Don’t even think about it. Upon finding out how limited it is boxes sold out quickly. The general public never even had an opportunity to buy it directly from Topps. Prices have soared on the secondary market.

A checklist has been posted on the Topps website for 2022 Topps UEFA Champions League 1st Edition. No word yet if this will be something Montgomery Club members will get first access to or not.

2022 Topps 582 Montgomery Club – Set #1

Members of the Topps 582 Montgomery Club received their first set from the 2022 membership.

The set consists of (20) cards, plus (1) autograph. As you can see the rookies are from 2021 even though it is part of the 2022 membership. This has always been the case with Set #1. Rookies in future 2022 sets should actually be 2022 rookies such as Wander Franco. Fingers crossed.

Set #1 autographs range from rookies to retired stars. Retired player autographs seem to be more difficult to pull.

It should be noted that Keibert Ruiz’s card in this set pictures Luis Garcia instead.

Here is what arrived in my set:

Auto:

  • Tim Wakefield

Set:

  • Keibert Ruiz RC #1
  • Jonathan India RC #2
  • Tim Wakefield #3
  • Trevor Rodgers RC #4
  • Cedric Mullins #5
  • Logan Gilbert RC #6
  • Joe Carter #7
  • Ken Griffey Sr. #8
  • Teoscar Hernandez #9
  • Nick Gordon RC #10
  • Marcus Semien #11
  • Patrick Wisdom #12
  • Daz Cameron RC #13
  • Jim Abbott #14
  • Aaron Civale #15
  • Akil Baddoo RC #16
  • Adolis Garcia #17
  • Shohei Ohtani #18
  • Mike Trout #19
  • Fernando Tatís Jr. #20

I’ve already received my order confirmation from Topps for Set #2. No shipping notification yet. 2022 Topps Baseball Series 1 is suppose to be due out on February 16. I can’t imagine Topps would release Set #2 of the 582 Montgomery Club membership containing 2022 rookie cards before their main flagship release. If Set #2 arrives around the same time as 2022 Topps Baseball Series 1 and it has a Wander Franco rookie card in it, I most likely would move it ASAP. Cards of his containing the rookie card logo are going to be in huge demand. As the year progresses more and more rookie card logo cards of his will surface. Selling it early when there aren’t as many, and picking it up later in the year for a lower price might be the best option. This is all pure speculation though. Set #2 may not even have a Wander Franco rookie card in it. Even though I have the order confirmation there is no saying when it will arrive. It could very easily show up with a Wander Franco rookie card in it well after 2022 Topps Baseball Series 1 releases.

2021 Bowman Heritage, and 2021 Bowman Draft Sapphire Edition are two pre-sales that 2022 club members have been notified about.

Bowman Heritage was suppose to go up for sale on 1/4. Then it was pushed back to 1/11. It never popped-up for sale on 1/11, and we haven’t heard a word about it since. Hopefully we hear something soon.

Bowman Draft Sapphire Edition went smoothly for club members. The public sale had some issues. I made the decision to pass on this release as the price was $200/box. Sure, a prospect could end up becoming the next Mike Trout while box prices go through the roof. I just thought it was a little expensive for (32) cards – (30) base, (2) parallels, and no autographs. Days of flipping boxes right out of the gate might be over due to Topps seeing what some of these products sell for on the secondary market. Products that have not received the “Sapphire” treatment before, and do not have a comparable example might be the only type left to flip.
