Its time to enjoy a long weekend.  Kick back and have a burger.  Can you Guess The Set?  I’ll post the answer in the comment section and on Twitter tonight around 8:00 p.m. EST.  Thanks to sports artist Monty Sheldon for making this recommendation.

Hint – Like 1989 Fleer, this set has a card containing an expletive written on the bat knob.

The 35th National Has Begun!

Its official.  The 35th National Sports Collectors Convention has begun.  Autographs, cards, and promos are flying all over the place.  Every single collector in the world should be in Cleveland right now.

I arrived in plenty of time to obtain my VIP and Guest/Media credentials.  Then off to the VIP Party I went.  After eating some pizza and a cookie, the show opened to VIPs at 3:30pm.  Take a look!

Now for the pickups.  While waiting in line for Dale Murphy, I just happened to be standing next to the Topps booth.  I decided to pickup a box of 2014 Topps Minis.  With every purchase of a Topps Minis box, you get a jumbo card made just for the show.  I picked Mike Trout.

These OYO minifigures were actually the first promos I got upon entering the show.

I stopped by Marty’s Sports Card Exchange and bought a box of 2014 Allen & Ginter.  The I went to Blowout Cards and bought another just so I could get the Johnny Manziel Beckett Cover card.  Both boxes were unwrapped at the Topps booth and I got my Abreu and Tanaka exclusive National mini promos.  I still need to go through my boxes to see what I got.

“Pin-Up” of the Week: RDZ Super Bowl 30 Club – First World Championship Game AFL vs NFL Pin

The Super 30 Club is a set of pins made by RDZ for the NFL.  Certain members of the media that covered the first thirty Super Bowls were given this exclusive set.  Each pin in the set commemorates one of the first thirty Super Bowls.  Depending on which Super Bowl you’re looking at, the price per pin can vary.  Especially when there were only 110 sets produced.  In the world of pins, that isn’t a lot.  This pin that commemorates the first Super Bowl recently sold at auction for just over $100.00.  Pins like this can be found from one of the best pin dealers on eBay – THE PIN MAN.

Super Bowl I took place on January 15, 1967 between the Packers and Chiefs.  The Packers went on to win 35-10 and Bart Starr was named the MVP.

“Pin-Up” of the Week: Monday Night Matchup – Raiders vs. Seahawks – November 30, 1987

Photobucket

Leading up to the Monday Night Football game on November 30, 1987, Seahawks lineacker Brian Bosworth was all talk about how he was going to stop Jackson.  Anyone who watched the game knows that Jackson ran all over the Seahawks running for 221-yards and scoring 3 touchdowns.  When scoring his third touchdown, Jackson literally ran Bosworth right to the ground.

If there was anyone that had the chance to make it into both the Baseball Hall of Fame and Football Hall of Fame, it was Bo Jackson.  Unfortunately due to injury both careers were cut short.  Now when we look back all we can think about are the “what ifs”.

Brian Bosworth on the other hand will go down as one of the biggest busts in NFL history.  The hype he built around himself didn’t hold up.  He was a target, a talker, and a marketing machine.  Bosworth certainly knew how to entertain the public and sell tickets.
