1997 UD Legends Football Returns Again

Images and information about the new 2009 Ultimate Collection Football has been public for about a week, but I wanted to share with you some info I obtained about the 1997 Legends signatures that are one of the biggest hits with this product.  Just like last year, collectors can pull autographs of Hall of Famers/retired players from ’09 Ultimate Collection that are designed just like the famous 1997 UD Legends set.  Last week’s product preview showed that Darrell Green will be included, but I’ve learned of a few others that collectors can look for this year: Bruce Smith, Dan Marino, Warren Moon, Drew Bledsoe, and Mike Alstott.  These cards are usually case hits and quite difficult to pull.  Mike Alstott must feel like signing stuff this year because before 2009 he didn’t have a ton of autographs.  Out of that list, I believe that the Marino will be one of the most valuable since he has such a large collecting fan base.  I know I’d love to pull one of those.  I also learned from Upper Deck that they have been trying to get signatures of Dolphins HOFer Nick Buoniconti, but haven’t received a response yet.  Buoniconti is one of the members of the Miami Dolphins Perfect Season team, and doesn’t have a certified autograph and/or relic.  Hopefully thats one they can get for future products.

Revisiting 1997 Upper Deck Legends Football

North Las Vegas, NV (December 15, 2008) – When Upper Deck released its 1997 Legends Football set, it changed the industry forever. Collectors fell in love with the set for the simple, yet classic design, its incredible value, and the opportunity it presented to pull autograph cards from some of the greatest players in the game.

Something was missing in the set, however. Where were the current superstars? Players like John Elway, Barry Sanders, Jerry Rice, Troy Aikman and others were not included in the original set. Collectors will have their first opportunity to add those players to their 1997 Legends set when 2008 Ultimate Collection Football releases on February 11, 2009.

These new cards will have the same classic design as the ‘97 Legends set and all autographs will be hard-signed on the cards. These cards will also be numbered as part of the ‘97 set. Collectors can find one ‘97 Legends update autograph card per case on average.

“Collectors have been waiting for us to resurrect this set for some time,” said Brandon Miller, Upper Deck brand manager for football. “It was important enough to us that if we did it, we did it by providing collectors with the players who were not available on the initial checklist. Well, we’ve accomplished just that so football fans should be thrilled to add these cards to their set.

Bruce Smith is Back

The ‘Sack Man’ Returns

Signature cards of the legendary sack specialist Bruce Smith highlight new Upper Deck Football releases

North Las Vegas, NV (December 10, 2008) – Some retired players just do not sign very often. Bruce Smith, one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history has been one of those players, until now. Upper Deck reached a deal with the 11-time Pro Bowl legend to sign autograph cards in the recent releases of 2008 SP Rookie Edition Football and 2008 Ultimate Collection Football.

Bruce Smith hasn’t signed for trading card companies in ages so his inclusion in new sets is obviously exciting news for collectors. Smith is featured as a member of the Washington Redskins where he retired with the NFL record of 200 career sacks.

Two signature cards were released of the “Sack Man” in 2008 SP Rookie Edition Football. Only one has surfaced on e-Bay so far and it is currently available for close to $60 with over four days remaining.

For 2008 Ultimate Collection Football he will be included in the “Legends Autograph” set. This special set features newer legends that were still playing when this famous 1997 Upper Deck Legends set was initially released. He will join other legends like Troy Aikman, John Elway, Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders, Jerry Rice and more.

Collectors can find 2008 SP Rookie Edition Football in stores now. Upper Deck will launch 2008 Ultimate Collection Football on February 11.
