“Pin-Up” of the Week: 1952 Dodgers World Series Press Pin

 photo 1952wsbumpinpress_zps1d7ec950.jpeg

When it comes to the World Series, there are a lot of collectibles.  Pins are at the top of what collectors want.  Especially the pins issued to members of the press.  The older they are, the more valuable they get.  I’m looking forward to seeing what the 2014 World Series press pin looks like.  I guess we’ll see those popping up next week.

The Brooklyn Dodgers put up a good fight against the Yankees, but lost the 1952 World Series 4 games to 3.  Billy Martin made a game-saving catch in Game 7, and Mickey Mantle hit the first of what would be 18 career World Series home runs in Game 6.

Every single World Series press pin is unique.  This one in particular stands out to me because of the fat dude holding up the “This IS Next Year” sign.  That dude who looks like the villain from A Nightmare Before Christmas is known as the Brooklyn Bum.  The Brooklyn Bum was created by sports cartoonist Willard Mullin and is the personification of the Dodgers team at the time.  Although nobody really wants to be considered a bum, fans from Brooklyn seemed to embrace the character.  This became Mullin’s most famous creation.

I highly doubt we’ll ever see a cigar smoking character associated with the World Series again, but I guess back then it didn’t matter.  This pin is very sought after by collectors, and sells for almost $400.00.

1955 Brooklyn Dodgers Card Subset to be Released on 55th Anniversary of Brooklyn’s only World Series Championship!

Artist Monty Sheldon has been creating Sheldon’s Sketch Card Champions during the past two years, and in addition to the 2010 regular set, he will be releasing a sub set that will acknowledge the 55th anniversary of the World Series Championship achieved by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1955.

Sheldon’s sketch cards are made available weekly through E-bay auctions, and starting with card no. 106 and continuing through card no. 112 he will be auctioning off a 55th anniversary set of the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers, who won their only World Series Championship in an exciting 7-game series versus their World Series nemesis, the New York Yankees.

Sheldon will be providing a sketch card that will correspond with each game played of the 1955 World Series.  Included in the set will be Dodger team members  that played a pivotal role in each of the games and each card will be signed and finished 55 years to the exact day that World Series game was played, making this a true 55th anniversary set.

Included below is a player checklist and the auction end date for each card.  The scheduled eBay 7-day auctions will all take place at (10:55 PM eastern, 7:55 PM pacific) and you can find Sheldon’s auctions by clicking here.

  • Tuesday, SEPT 28 (game 1) – Jackie Robinson & Carl Furillo (card #106) – auction ends 10/5

Need I Say More

The Phillies are headed to the 2008 World Series!!!!!!!!!!!!  Now, I wish I could find a 2008 Phillies NLC hat like the ones they were wearing on the field last night.  MLB.com is sold out.  I was lucky enough to get a 2008 Division Champions hat.  I guess they will restock sometime.  It was a great game!  I knew the Phillies would win once Jimmy Rollins started the game with a HR.  Go Phillies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UPDATE:

I found the hats on MLB.com!  Got my order in and its on the way!

One More Win!

All the Phillies have to do is win one more game and then they head to the World Series.  So far my prediction of the Phillies and Rays is looking good.  Last night was such a good game.  One of the best things about the Phillies getting this far is that a lot of Phillies cards you don’t see very often start hitting the market, which is great for Phillies collectors because now you can snag them up.  I have been watching the Phillies for a long time, and this has to be the best season in awhile.

Phillies Take Game 2

Phillies take Game 2 and beat the Dodgers 8-5.  Come on World Series!!!!!!!
