Flashback Product of the Week: 2006 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection Baseball

Can you believe it has been ten years since Upper Deck released 2006 Exquisite Collection Baseball?  A lot has changed for Upper Deck since 2006.  The company that revolutionized the industry with it’s first set in 1989 no longer makes many baseball cards.  Today they stick with their NHL, various entertainment properties, and memorabilia products.  They still make some of the best looking cards in the hobby.  It would be a dream come true if they could get back to what they use to be.  Topps, Upper Deck, and Leaf could make better use of an NFL license than Panini.

Upper Deck didn’t issue 2006 Exquisite Collection Baseball as a standalone product.  Instead they inserted mystery redemption cards within five of their other sets.  The products you could pull one of these redemption cards out of includes UD2OvationLegendary CutsSPx, and Fleer Tradition.  At the time, your best bet at pulling one was from a box of SPx (1:2 boxes).  The redemptions have long since expired, but the cards which were redeemed still live on.

What did one of these mystery redemption cards guarantee you?  Collectors that redeemed them would most likely receive an autograph, relic, or autograph/relic numbered to no more than (65) copies.  Some lucky people received full-sized pieces of autographed memorabilia.  Upper Deck even threw in a meet and greet, custom Exquisite Baseball box, and a chance to win a free box of every Upper Deck/Fleer baseball product released in 2007.

It was a blast to pull one of these.  I got mine from a pack of SPx.  I wasn’t sure if I was going to sell the redemption or redeem it.  In the end, I couldn’t sell it thinking that someone might get a Babe Ruth cut signature.  After punching in the code, I got a really neat looking Manny Ramirez Exquisite Memorabilia/Maximum Patch #’ed/25.

Relic cards of older players from this set like Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, and Stan Musial are still popular.  Obviously many of the cut signatures are in demand.  The Lou Gehrig/Joe DiMaggio Dual Cuts recently sold for $6,500.  Justin Verlander is probably the most notable rookie you could’ve pulled an autograph of.  Others include Jered Weaver, Cole Hamels, and Jonathan Papelbon.

Golf Collectors Feast Your Eyes On 2014 Upper Deck Exquisite Golf

The very high-end brand from Upper Deck known as Exquisite has covered basketball, baseball, football, hockey, and now golf.  Feast your eyes on these awesome looking, museum quality cards that I’m sure will make fantastic centerpieces to anyone’s golf collection.  On-card autographs, shadowboxes, multi-colored swatches, and booklets just scratch the surface as to what this product has in store.  I highly doubt that there is a single bad box.  That unfortunately does come with a cost.  And in the case of Exquisite Golf its a significant one.  Boxes are currently pre-selling  online for almost $700.00.  I know there are a lot of hardcore golf collectors out there, but whether or not they want to spend that much on a box is another question.  Upper Deck will be giving away a few boxes during the National this year.
