2016 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball Box Break & Review

 photo 16toppsgpbbbox_zpscdo4hwmn.jpg

Topps releases a bunch of popular baseball set building products every year.  The top ones in my book are the three flagship brands – Series 1Series 2, and Update, all the Heritage sets, Allen & Ginter, and Gypsy Queen.  I think Gypsy Queen is very underrated which is why I consider it one of my personal favorites even though I’m not a full blown set collector.  All on-card autographs, retro theme, and that painted filter Topps uses on the photos has always drawn my attention.

Dodgers fans should enjoy 2016 Gypsy Queen quite a bit considering it has the first autographs of rookie pitcher Kenta Maeda.  He’s been doing well so far.  Maeda won in his MLB debut and even hit a home run.  That was enough to get him a Topps Now card the next day.  But to call his acquisition a total success is a little too early.  The value of his cards will remain high as collectors speculate about his future.  Its been this way for a lot of highly anticipated rookies since the beginning of time.

On a broad scale, I’d have to say the on-card autographs are a favorite of mine.  Especially the ones from that mini short print pack that comes in every box.  I just like the way they look.  All of the autographs look nice from the base level all the way to the fancy hard-signed patch booklets.

There is however a group of cards from Gypsy Queen that I hold above everything else.  I’m talking about the Original Art Patch Cards.  These pieces are stunning.  Monty Sheldon is the artist behind all (37) this year.  Consider yourself extremely lucky if you pull one.  Not only are they difficult to find, this is the only product you see cards like this in.  Its a once a year thing.  Card companies doing something once a year is almost unheard of today.  Usually if something catches on, it gets mass produced.  Not these though.  Topps has kept it this way since 2011.  Perhaps one of these years Topps would consider making these into a booklet.  I think it would be cool to have the hand-drawn piece on one side, and a jumbo patch on the other.  Just a thought.

Outside of the traditional “hits”, Gypsy Queen has a ton of short prints and photo variations.  These are easier to spot with the return of different codes on the back.  The last few sets Topps released all had the same code making them harder to find.  Base end in 25, photo variations in 59.

Gypsy Queen is just a great all-around content rich product that has that high-end feel.  One of these days I’d like to own a Phillies Original Art Patch Card.  Generally speaking I wouldn’t mind pulling any of them.

Monty Sheldon’s 2016 Topps Gypsy Queen Original Art Patch Card Gallery

When Topps revived the Gypsy Queen brand in 2011, they introduced collectors to the Original Art Patch Card.  These are by far some of the nicest looking modern day cards.  I always enjoy hand-drawn cards the most, and these come with a multi-colored patch.  Its definitely not something you see done all the time.  Maybe once a year at the most.

With 2016 Gypsy Queen releasing on 4/6, I’d like to show you all (37) Original Art Patch Cards that you’ll have the chance to pull.  Every single card was drawn by sports artist Monty Sheldon.  They look great!  Monty has really outdone himself this time.  Any of these cards could easily be considered the centerpiece of someone’s collection.  Each card is a one-of-one, and is incredibly difficult to pull.  Congrats to anyone that gets one.

According to Topps, many of these masterpieces have been shipped out within the product.  A few of them might come as a redemption.  Either way it doesn’t really matter.  Topps has them already, and are ready to ship.  They shouldn’t take long to arrive.

The checklist this year includes top guys like Ken Griffey, Jr., Mike Trout, Kris Bryant, and Maikel Franco.  Click on each image for a closer look.

Topps To Issue Special Allen & Ginter & Gypsy Queen Cards For The ’15 NSCC

 photo 15NCCS_2015_TOPPS_ALLEN_AND_GINTER_DIE_CUTS_1077_zpsukuqv0gj.jpg

There are a lot of promos flying around the National each year.  Almost everyone has something going on in the corporate area.  I think Topps does it the best though.  The best thing about the exclusive cards Topps gives out during the National is that they can be integrated into already existing products like Allen & Ginter and Gypsy Queen.  Here is what they have going on for 2015.

Can you believe that Allen & Ginter turns ten this year?  Topps has created special die-cut Allen & Ginter cards only available at the National.  For every sealed 2015 Allen & Ginter hobby box that is brought to the Topps booth and opened in front of a Topps representative, you’ll receive a pack.  This year Topps has randomly included autographs.

Topps will also have a Gypsy Queen giveaway.  Topps will have 3-card packs that contain cards of Kris Bryant, Carlos Correa, and Byron Buxton in the 2015 Gypsy Queen design.  Look for parallels!!!  To get one of these packs, you need to open one sealed hobby box of the following 2014 or 2015 products listed below:

  • All 2015 Topps and Bowman hobby boxes (Opening Day does not count)

2015 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball Box Break & Review

 photo 15gqbbbox_zpsxoxj5u5r.jpg

Gypsy Queen is 100% baseball.  It certainly has the look and feel of a product like Allen & Ginter, but it doesn’t have all that crazy extra stuff.  Its baseball from the most common base card all the way to the big high-end “hits”.  There have been a few changes over the years, but overall its pretty much the same.

Even though I’m not someone that opens products that are put together like this, I’ve always admired Gypsy Queen’s overall design.  I really enjoy the artistic look.  This is a product that has some meat on it’s bones.  It certainly isn’t a product that you simply rip through really fast and just look for the autographs and relics.  You need to take your time and do your homework in order to get the full Gypsy Queen experience.  That mini or base card you’re holding which isn’t serial numbered could very well be rarer than any of the autographs or relics you just pulled.

The base set consists of (300) cards.  Technically its (350) when you add in the (50) short prints.  Card numbers (301-350) are considered SPs.  SPs should fall 1:4 packs.  Mini SPs that parallel the base come (1) per box.  Photo variations are a big deal when it comes to Gypsy Queen.  There are (50) photo variations when it comes to the base set.  The mini cards have (100) photo variations.

Inside every hobby box you should find (2) autographs and (2) relics.  Hobby boxes also contain an exclusive 10-card mini box.  Within the mini box you’ll find (10) exclusive mini variation cards that cannot be pulled from the regular packs.  You can also look for randomly inserted autographs numbered to (10).  The biggest addition to 2015 Gypsy Queen this year are the inserts.  Glove Stories, Walk-Off Winners, and The Queen’s Throwbacks are all new.

Like I said before, my favorite aspect of Gypsy Queen is the artwork.  Gypsy Queen is known for it’s Original Art Patches.  Monty Sheldon and Brad Utterstrom worked on these cards.  Monty Sheldon even did the artwork for the Basics Of Base Ball insert set.  I would like to see Topps make some art patch booklets.  I think those would look really nice.
