2022 Topps Heritage Baseball Hobby Box Break & Review

Collector Type: Set

Now its time for the 1973 Topps Baseball design to receive the Heritage treatment.

The original 1973 Topps Baseball set is known for many key cards of Hall of Famers. But one card rises above them all. That card would be the Mike Schmidt/John Hilton/Ron Cey RC #615. 2022 isn’t the first time Mike Schmidt has been included within a Heritage set, but Topps made sure to make some really cool cards of him this year.

The base set consists of a whopping (500) cards. Parallels include French Text #’ed/73, Black Border (50 copies), and Flip Stock (5 copies). Cards #401-500 are Short Prints.

(130) cards have Mini versions #’ed/100.

(100) cards have Chrome versions. Base Chrome cards are #’ed/999. Chrome parallels include Hot Box Purple Refractor, Refractor #’ed/673, Red Refractor #’ed/573, Silver Refractor #’ed/373, Green Refractor #’ed/273, Black Refractor #’ed/73, Gold Refractor #’ed/5, and SuperFractor #’ed 1/1. According to Topps, Trea Turner, Trey Mancini, and Ryan Mountcastle have Chrome cards, but do not appear in the base set. We will see their base cards in 2022 Topps Heritage High Number. Something similar happened with Cavan Biggio in Topps Heritage last year.

Photo variations are a huge part of the Heritage brand. Luckily with Heritage, Topps prints the variation type next to the card number on the back. I’ve also noticed that most of the time they are placed inside packs upside down. This makes identifying them easier. If checking the CMP codes is still your thing, here is a breakdown:

  • Base – #915
  • Short Print – #931
  • Chrome – #935
  • French Text #’ed/73 – #943
  • Error – #944
  • Player Icon Color Swap – #947
  • Throwback – #948
  • Image – #949
  • Team and Name Color Swap – #950
  • Nickname – #951

Autographs include Real One Autographs, Real One Dual Autographs, Real One Triple Autographs, 1973 Cut Signatures, and Oversized Base 1973 Topps Autographs.

Autograph/Relics include Clubhouse Collection Autographed Relics, Clubhouse Collection Dual Autographed Relics, and Flashbacks Autographed Relics.

Relics include 1973 Mint Relics, 1973 U.S. Postage Stamp Relics, Clubhouse Collection Relics, Clubhouse Collection Dual Relics, Clubhouse Collection Triple Relics, and Clubhouse Collection Quad Relics.

Inserts include Baseball Flashbacks, News Flashbacks, New Age Performers, Then and Now, 1973 Topps Pin-Ups Posters, 1973 Baseball Stamped Originals, and Oversized Base 1973 Topps. The checklist also mentions 1973 Topps Comics, 1973 Topps Candy Lids, and 1973 Topps Venezuela Stamps, but I have yet to see these show up.

A hobby box should contain (1) autograph or relic.

2021 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball Hobby Box Break & Review

Collector Type: Set

Continuing where 2021 Topps Heritage left off, 2021 Topps Heritage High Number takes us back to the summer of 1972.

The base set consists of (225) cards. The last (25) cards #701-725 are Short Prints. Parallels include Black Border #’ed/50, and Flip Stock #’ed/5.

It should be noted that card #216 of Cavan Biggio has now been printed. This card was meant for the regular Topps Heritage set released earlier this year, but didn’t make it in due to an error.

(100) cards have Chrome parallels. Chrome parallels include Purple Hot Box, Refractor #’ed/572, Red Border #’ed/372, Black Border #’ed/72, Gold Border #’ed/5 (Hobby), and Superfractor #’ed 1/1.

(54) cards have Base Minis #’ed/100, and (97) cards have French Text Back O-Pee-Chee versions.

Image Variations include Action, City Uniform/Throwback, Error, Missing Stars, Nickname, and Team Color Swap. The Image Variation type is listed beneath the card number on the back. No need to check the CMP codes.

Autographs include Real One Autographs, Real One Dual Autographs, 1972 World Series Champion Autographs, and 1972 Cut Signatures.

Autograph Relics include Clubhouse Collection Autographed Relics, and Clubhouse Collection Dual Autographed Relics.

Relics include Clubhouse Collection Relics, Clubhouse Collection Dual Relics, Clubhouse Collection Triple Relics, and Clubhouse Collection Quad Relics.

Inserts include 1972 World Series Highlights, 1972 Topps Venezuela Stamps, Award Winners, Combo Cards, Now and Then, Roberto Clemente 3,000, and Rookie Performers.

Box Toppers include 1972 Topps Oversized, 1972 Topps Oversized Autographs, 1972 Baseball Posters, and 1972 Topps Originals.

Waiting for every collector inside a hobby box is (1) autograph or relic. Most likely a relic from the Clubhouse Collection is what you will find. But if you’re really lucky you might find an autograph or other high-end hit.

I’ve been opening some really well-balanced boxes recently. This one is right up there. I pulled an autograph, Chrome Black Border #’ed/72, and a very decent 1972 Topps Originals Buyback Box Topper.

2021 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball Hobby Box Break & Review

Collector Type: Set/Autograph/Minor League Baseball fans

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. A lot of people have a better connection with Minor League teams because in many cases its the only opportunity they have to see a professional baseball game in person.

The base set consists of (200) cards. Parallels include Blue #’ed/99, Green #’ed/75, Black #’ed/50, Flip Stock #’ed/25, Gold #’ed/18, and Red #’ed 1/1.

Cards #201-#220 are Short Prints.

There are two types of variations to watch out for – Image and Frame Color. Image variations have a CMP code that ends in #900. Whereas the Frame Color variations have a CMP code that end in #901. The Frame Color variations also state “Frame Color” beneath the card number on the back.

Autographs include Real One Autographs, Real One Dual Autographs, 1972 Topps Pack Cover Autographs, Base Image Variation Autographs, and 1972 Topps Baseball Poster Card Autographs.

Inserts include 1972 Topps Boyhood Photos of the Stars, 1972 Topps Pack Cover Cards, 1972 Topps Venezuelan Stamp Cards, and 1972 Topps Baseball Poster Cards.

With the price of sealed wax at an all-time high, a box of 2021 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball might just be the most affordable choice. A hobby box contains (18) packs, and guarantees (2) on-card autographs. As of this writing, a box will run you under $70.
