2015 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball Box Break & Review

 photo 15toppsheritageminorsbox_zpshqxityju.jpg

Throughout the summer, I attend a lot of minor league games.  Especially on nights they’re giving out bobbleheads.  I actually find myself more connected to these minor league products than anything else.  Its fun to see teams like the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, Harrisburg Senators, and Reading Fightin Phils featured on cardboard.  A lot of minor league teams issue team sets to be sold in their gift shops.  Those sets still have collectible appeal, but nothing like stuff Topps issues.

Its true that many players in these minor league sets have cards in older products.  Some of those older products have been out for awhile, and their cards will most likely be more desirable.  A first year Bowman Chrome autograph from 2014 probably will be in higher demand than a card of the same player from a later minor league product.  That’s just how it is.  Now it all depends on the rarity of each too.

MiLB teams have some of the craziest names and logos.  Its fun to see them all on vintage looking 1966 card stock.  2015 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball features a 225-card set.  The last (25) cards are short prints.  Each box should yield (2) autographs and (1) relic, plus a handful of parallels and inserts.  Overall the cards look pretty good, except sticker autographs are the norm.  I don’t believe they could get away with this amount of stickers for the MLB version of Heritage.

I’d have to say that my favorite cards are the Looming Legacy Autographs.  These do not feature young prospects at all.  Instead its the total opposite.  This 9-card set features veterans in their minor league uniforms.  The set includes Andruw Jones, Cliff Floyd, Chipper Jones, Juan Gonzalez, John Smoltz, Nomar Garciaparra, Omar Vizquel, Rondell White, and Vladimir Guerrero.  I like that these use original photos too.  I want to see more baseball legends in their minor league uniforms.  TRISTAR did that with Obak, but that brand has been dead for years.

Here is what I pulled:

PHOTOS: Lancaster Barnstormers vs. Somerset Patriots

Last night I took a drive down to Lancaster to see the Barnstormers take on the Somerset Patriots.  As you can see, Lancaster lost 3-2.  Clipper Magazine Stadium has to have the best food out of any stadium I’ve been to this summer.  I picked up a 2010 Team Set,’09 Update Set, and of coarse a new pin for my collection.  The first 1,500 fans 16 and older received a James Buchanan bobblehead.  Buchanan is the only Pennsylvania-born President and lived in Lancaster.

PHOTOS: Harrisburg Senators vs. Portland Sea Dogs

Last night I took a trip down to Harrisburg to see the Senators take on the Portland Sea Dogs.  The Senators are the AA affiliate of the Washington Nationals and the Sea Dogs are affiliated with the Red Sox.  This was the first time I had been to Metro Bank Park.  I attended a few Senators games many years ago, but that was well before they built this new stadium.  Parking was a little weird, and the food could have been better.  I really liked my seat because foul balls were coming my way all the time.  In the end, Harrisburg won 10-0.

I picked up three different team sets:

  • Eastern Division 2010 All-Star Set
  • Western Division 2010 All-Star Set
  • Harrisburg Senators 2010 Team Set – this one has Strasburg in it

As you can see, SpongeBob was at the game.  He should have pitched.  I hear he has a nasty “sinker” 🙂
