Monty Sheldon’s 2012 Gypsy Queen Patch Sketch Card Sneak Peak

Photobucket

Last year Topps introduced collectors to the patch sketch cards found in Gypsy Queen Baseball.  They were some of the most sought after cards within the product.  Most of them sold well into the high hundreds of dollars.  It looks as if Topps will continue to have patch sketch cards in the 2012 version of Gypsy Queen Baseball.  Sports artist Monty Sheldon has created 28 patch sketch cards for Gypsy Queen this year.  This evening Mr. Sheldon released the above preview of his work you can look for.  They look really great!  Of coarse they’re all serial numbered 1/1.

Monty Sheldon’s 2011 Mini Sketch Card Series

Sports artist Monty Sheldon released a few images of his 2011 mini sketch card series.  Each framed mini sketch is serial numbered 1/1 and measures 1 1/2″ x 2 7/16″.  Each time Sheldon reaches a “like” milestone on his Facebook Fan Page (#100, 200, 300, etc) he will have a giveaway where you can win some of his work from this series.

Monty Sheldon was one of the earliest employees at Dark Horse comics before leaving to start working on his popular Artballs.  Since then he has expanded into cigar boxes, hockey pucks, and his own sketch card series.  You can also see a lot of his work in various Topps products such as Allen & Ginter, Chicle, and Gypsy Queen.  Sheldon did an interview with Sports Card Info two years ago, and I have been following his work ever since.

Collectors React Strongly To Gypsy Queen’s Sketch Patches

Topps made an excellent decision when they decided to include one-of-one sketch cards that contain patches into boxes of their new 2011 Gypsy Queen Baseball.  I think they look excellent!  Its not a surprise that collectors seem to be going head over heals for these things that fall 1:22 cases.  Check out some of these auctions:

Nolan Ryan 1/1 Sketch Patch

Dave Winfield 1/1 Sketch Patch

Albert Pujols 1/1 Sketch Patch

Monty Sheldon did a fantastic job with these things.  I think they might be some of his best work.  These beat fancy video trading cards any day of the week.

Monty Sheldon’s Sketch Card Relics for ’11 Gypsy Queen

Monty Sheldon posted a bunch of scans over on his Facebook page of the sketch card relics he did for 2011 Topps Gypsy Queen.  I think they came out really good.  Sketch cards are one of my favorite things in the hobby, mainly because they truly are one-of-one’s and are miniature pieces of artwork.  These are my favorite.

Recent Monty Sheldon Art

Monty Sheldon has been hard at work designing his famous “Artballs” and cigar boxes.  One of his newest “Artballs” commemorates probably the darkest time in baseball – the steroid era.

These baseballs are so colorful and detailed.  They make an excellent addition to any collection.

Check out this Pete Rose wooden cigar box he painted too.  If you have a favorite card, something like this would make a great display piece.

I always like to showoff the Harry Kalas sketch card Monty made for me.  You won’t find anything else like it.

Connie Mack’s 1st Sketch Card

Thanks to Monty Sheldon, Connie Mack has his very first sketch card.  Mack collectors usually need to have some pretty deep wallets.  His cut signatures are extremely expensive and he has no relics.  Recently he was included into one of my favorite products, ’10 TRISTAR OBAK.  This is truly one of Mack’s most unique cards to own.

New Sheldon Sketches!

Yesterday, August 16, 2010 was the 90th anniversary of Carl Mays fateful pitch that did in Ray Chapman back on August 16, 1920.  Because of the tragedy of that one pitch, new baseballs were put into play after they got dirty which in turn ruined the pitching trade for those who were referred to as spitballers.

To commemorate this monumental event in baseball history, Monty Sheldon created two sketch cards.  One of Mays and one of Chapman.  They look really good, and you can check out his auctions here.

Monty Sheldon Mailday Includes A Very Rare Kalas Sketch

This afternoon I received a package in the mail from renown sports artist Monty Sheldon.  Inside was a birthday gift that I will never let leave my personal collection.  Monty took the time to draw me a Harry Kalas one-of-one sketch card.  This card is way beyond awesome!!!!!!!!!  It was extremely nice of him to take the time to draw this cardboard masterpiece.  This has to be the ultimate one-of-one in my collection.  You won’t be able to find another card like this anywhere else in the world.  You can’t imagine how surprised I was when I opened the package.  This has to be one of the nicest cards I own.  Now this is a true one-of-one.

In addition to the Harry Kalas sketch card, Monty also sent my three Phillies 2010 National Chicle SP’s, and he autographed a few Chicle cards for me including Michael Vick and Jimmie Foxx.

Be sure to check out Monty Sheldon’s website and auctions.

This card depicts Hall of Fame Phillies broadcaster, Harry Kalas, throwing out the first pitch.  Monty Sheldon even signed and dated the back of the card.  It is card number 64 in his 2010 Sketch Card Set.
