Flashback Product of the Week: 1995 Tombstone Pizza

 photo tombstone95_zpspph7hjeg.jpg

Food manufacturers have been including sports cards within their products for decades.  It doesn’t occur as much anymore.  But at one time sports cards were offered from potato chip companies to dog food producers.  Everyone wanted in on it.  Some of the earliest baseball cards I own come from Kraft, Stouffer’s, and Wheaties.  I always thought it was cool to get a promo with food.

The folks at Tombstone Pizza created a few different sets throughout the 90s.  In 1995, I remember pulling a Frank Thomas card from one of their frozen pizzas.  The 1995 Tombstone Baseball set consists of (30) regular cards.  There are (15) players from the National League and (15) from the American League.  Inside each Tombstone Pizza you would find (1) card.  One of the cooler things that I didn’t realize until now was that they included some randomly inserted autographs.  Some lucky pizza lovers opened their box and found an autographed card of George Brett, Johnny Bench, or Bob Gibson.  According to my research, Tombstone included 6,000 autographs.  I don’t believe there were 6,000 of each made.  I think they each signed 2,000 a piece.  Either way it would awesome to open a pizza and find and autograph.  In order to get the certificate of authenticity you needed to send away for it.  You could also send away for a complete set with (5) proofs-of-purchase.

Speaking of pizza.  Has anyone tried the new hot dog filled crust pizza from Pizza Hut?  These look really good.  Now all they have to do is wrap it in bacon.

New York Giants – Nicks & Hynoski – Amato’s Autograph Signing

New York Giants fullback Henry Hynoski and wide receiver Hakeem Nicks signed autographs for fans at the Amato’s Pizza in Selinsgrove this afternoon.  Amato’s had plenty of items to get autographed, plus a silent auction filled with many signed pieces of memorabilia.  Hynoski is a graduate of Southern Columbia Area High School which isn’t that far away from the Selinagrove area.  I believe this was the first time Amato’s held an autograph signing at their restaurant.  Tickets had to be purchased in advance, and the lines seemed to be steady.  In my opinion, everything ran smoothly.  There didn’t appear to be any major hang-ups.  Amato’s is about 3 seconds away from my house, and this has to have been one of the easiest autograph signings I’ve ever attended.  It was very well organized.  Amato’s has great food too.  Along with their pizza, I also enjoy their ravioli and cheesesteak in the garden.

Henry Hynoski – Hynoski doesn’t have that many cards to collect.  His rookies can be found in ’11 Playoff Contenders, ’11 Plates & Patches, and ’11 National Treasures.

Autographs and Pizza

Yes, I’d like to place an order for an extra large pizza with pepperoni, sausage, and a Yogi Berra autograph.

For a long time food companies placed sports cards within their products for promotional purposes.  One of the most notable food related cards would probably be the ones that could be found with Red Heart Dog Food back in the 50’s where collectors were able to redeem their cards for almost 20 years (thats a long redemption program).  One of the earliest baseball cards I ever owned actually comes from a Stouffers pizza box.  Its a Yogi Berra popup card that Stouffers included with their pizza for a short time in 1995.  Until today, I had no clue that you could obtain autographed cards from Stouffers.  I’m not sure if they were randomly inserted or you needed to send away for them, but either way its pretty cool.  It even comes with a COA from Stouffers.  They aren’t that expensive either.  You can usually find the Berra for under $50.00.
