Brian Kong Is Bringing Some Promos To The 2013 National

Brian Kong will be setup at booth #787 for the 2013 National Sports Collectors Convention that begins this Wednesday evening.  Kong is a highly talented artist that has worked on many projects for Topps, Upper Deck, Leaf, and ITG.  Please stop by his booth as he will be displaying original artwork and working on sketch cards made just for the 2013 NSCC.  While you’re there, check out how you can obtain some free Matt Harvey and Yasiel Puig cards featuring his artwork.  Also check out how you can get your hands on a limited edition mini card set featuring Manny Machado, Bryce Harper, Yasiel Puig, and Mike Trout.  He’ll even be signing free autographs (10 autos per day).

Artist James Henry Smith just finished up this Ernie Banks portrait that Topps will use for their ’52 Bowman style promo set which will be given away during the 34th National Sports Collectors Convention this year.  Other players in the set will include Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, Frank Thomas, Geno Smith, Tavon Austin, EJ Manuel, and Eddie Lacy.  Topps will give away 100 copies of each card every day of the NSCC, and will wrap things up by giving away the original pieces of art that will be autographed by the players.

We have our first look at the Mike Trout portrait done by James Henry Smith that Topps will use for their ’52 Bowman retro promo set.  This set and the original artwork will be given away during the 34th National Sports Collectors Convention this year.  Other players in the set will include Bryce Harper, Ernie Banks, Frank Thomas, Geno Smith, Tavon Austin, EJ Manuel, and Eddie Lacy.  The original pieces of art will be autographed by the player.

Topps To Issue ’52 Bowman Retro Promo Set During The 2013 National

UPDATE

  • Topps has confirmed that the way to obtain one of these ’52 Bowman style promos is by opening (5) packs of a Topps or Bowman product at their booth.
  • In addition to the ’52 Bowman style promos, Topps will bring back their Bowman Platinum wrapper redemption program.  The Bowman Platinum redemption will be for a 25-card boxed set limited to 499 copies.  Topps only plans to give out 100 sets each day, and they will randomly include autographs.  The cards in this set will be a special parallel version of the regular base set that can only be obtained at the National.  All you have to do is be one of the first 100 people to open a box of 2013 Bowman Platinum at their booth.  Good luck 🙂

We’re only about two months away from the 34th National Sports Collectors Convention which will be held in Chicago from 7/31 to 8/4.  There is no question that one of the major draws are the promos given away by many of the manufacturers.  Collectors lineup early and rush through the doors so they can get their spot in line.

Its still a little early for companies to unveil their promotional programs for The National.  They typically begin announcing them in June, but I’ve got the details on one of the Topps promotions that will be held at their booth.  According to his Facebook page, sports artist James Henry Smith has been commissioned by Topps to paint eight original portraits (four baseball and four football) that they will use to make cards specifically for The National.  Each one of these portraits will be designed to look like the classic 1952 Bowman set, but will be of modern day players.  The original paintings will measure 8″ x 12-1/8″, will be signed by the player, then scanned and re-sized to 2.5″ x 3.5″ in order to get them down to a normal baseball card size.  Every card in the set will be limited to 500 copies.  Topps will also be giving away the original artwork at the show too.

Here are the players that will be included in this set:

Now they haven’t announced how these ’52 Bowman style promos will be distributed.  Given that Topps is printing 500 copies for each player, they’ll probably give out 100 per day for every player.  Since The National is open for five days this would make the most sense.  In order to get one, you’ll most likely have to open a few packs of a 2013 Topps product at their booth.  This is exactly what Topps did with their Gypsy Queen minis last year.

Topps is known for creating promos that can be integrated into their products, especially ones made for set collectors.  The 1952 Bowman design appears in 2013 Bowman this year in the form of signed minis. I’m guessing that is the connection they decided to go with.

When complete, the set will probably look something like this Paul “Tank” Younger 1952 Bowman card.  I’m really looking forward to seeing that painted design.

“Pin-Up” of the Week: 2001 Tiger Woods – What Famous Characters Might Say About Their McDonald’s Fries Promo Pin

Photobucket

What we have here is a promotional pin made by McDonald’s back in 2001.  It features the likeness of Tiger Woods (but it also looks like Obama) accompanied by the phrase “McDonald’s Fries And Me… “Masterful””.  This pin is part of a set called What Famous Characters Might Say About Their McDonald’s Fries.  Other pins in the set feature Captain Kirk, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Elvis, Mr. T, and James Bond.  Its filled with quite the collection of real and fictional characters.  None of them are that rare, and can easily be bought for $5.00.  I think this is definitely one of McDonald’s coolest promos.

Super Bowl XLVII Promo Pack Break

Last week I took advantage of Panini’s Super Bowl XLVII promotion they had going over on iCollectPanini.com.  In order to get one of these promo packs you had to purchase a 2012 football product worth $60.00 or more.  Luckily I was able to get in on the deal by picking up a retail box of 2012 Absolute before they sold out.  This weekend I plan to break the Absolute box, but I couldn’t wait to open my promo pack.

Inside was a Joe Greene autograph #’ed/25.  There really isn’t a bad pack when it comes to this promo.  Each pack has an autograph of a veteran or popular 2012 rookie numbered to 25 or less.

Panini Gives Collectors A Peek At Their Super Bowl XLVII Promos

The Super Bowl is a paradise for promos.  Now that we know who will be heading to the Super Bowl this year, the promos will start to roll out.  It sure didn’t take Panini long to give collectors a peek at their Super Bowl XLVII promotional set.  How does one obtain this set?  Nobody quite knows yet, but it won’t be long until they unveil the details.  Panini has a reputation of having some of the best promotional programs in the industry.  If there’s one thing they’re good at, its promos.

The 49ers and Ravens will play in Super Bowl XLVII on 2/3/13.  Its refreshing to see two teams in it that haven’t been there for a long time.  We finally have a year without the Giants or Patriots.  I believe I can speak for the hobby when I say that Colin Kaepernick surprised the hell out of us.  Nobody expected to see his cards selling for what they are now.

Panini’s Super Bowl plans are just unfolding.  There is much more to come.

Update

This set will be available at Panini’s booth during the Super Bowl XLVII NFL Experience.  It will consist of eight 49ers, eight Ravens, and eight Saints.  Plus there will be two commemorative patch cards.  One will commemorate Super Bowl XLVII and the other will commemorate Drew Brees’ performance in Super Bowl XLIV.  To see more be sure to check out The Knight’s Lance.

Benchwarmer’s 2012 NSCC Plans & Promos

Photobucket

Benchwarmer products reconfirm one of the oldest marketing strategies in the book – sex sells.  Are their models gorgeous?  Absolutely.  But I for one have never had the urge to go out and buy a box of this stuff.

Anyway, they have created an exclusive new product for the 2012 National Sports Collectors Convention.  2012 National features one 10-card pack per box.  Each card is a “hit”.  Look for Carmen Electra autographs and relics.

Anyone that opens a Benchwarmer product from 2008-present at the Leaf booth will receive a commemorative triple autographed card.

Who knows?  Maybe I’ll meet the future Mrs. Sports Card Info at the Benchwarmer booth 🙂
