Super Bowl Pylons & Autos Highlight Panini’s Black Friday Promos

Photobucket

Panini is really working hard with their 2011 Black Friday promos.  These specially marked packs will be made available at participating hobby shops and online this upcoming Black Friday.  Panini hasn’t totally said how collectors will obtain these packs, but I’m sure it will involve purchasing their products much like a lot of wrapper redemption promos work.  There will be much more news to come!!!

I gotta say Panini is going all out by including autographs and even Super Bowl pylon relics.  They look great.  One thing Panini is good at are promos like this.

Upper Deck’s 2010 National Promos and Redemption Programs

According to Upper Deck, the following promos and wrapper redemption programs will be going on during this year’s National in Baltimore.

Wednesday:

On Wednesday, VIP “Sneak Peek” Day, a special six-card, VIP-emblazoned cello-wrapped set will be available to all show attendees who show their VIP ticket admission to The National. The player lineup for this coveted takeaway includes LeBron James, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky.

Thursday – Sunday:

During each public day of the show – from Thursday through Sunday – Upper Deck will be conducting its popular foil pack wrapper redemption program starting at 12 noon. Fans who purchase five packs of any current Upper Deck card packs (baseball, basketball, football or hockey products) that carry a suggested retail price of $1.99 or more will receive one of four different 2010 National event-exclusive, five-card sets, while supplies last. Each day there will be a different five-card collection redeemed.

On Thursday, the five-card set will include Michael Jordan and Julius Erving, while Friday’s lineup includes LeBron James and Gordie Howe. Saturday’s set will feature Sidney Crosby, while Sunday’s roster will include such stars as Tiger Woods, Wayne Gretzky and David Robinson. A complete list of all the players available each day will be posted at the Upper Deck booth. Card packs must be opened in front of an Upper Deck representative for redeeming purposes. Note: Autographed cards of the following players will be randomly inserted into some of the packs: Gordie Howe, LeBron James and Michael Jordan.

Upper Deck is supporting our troops:

In addition, Upper Deck has produced an impressive 10-card “Million Pack March for the Troops” set for this year’s National aimed at calling attention to a special initiative the company launched last November. In conjunction with Operation Gratitude – in an effort to send sealed packs of donated Upper Deck cards to deserving U.S. military men and women overseas – the company has been encouraging collectors everywhere to donate some of their surplus card packs to the deserving troops. Upper Deck kicked the campaign off by donating 100,000 packs of cards with the goal being to reach the 1,000,000-pack plateau by Veterans’ Day 2010. And one of the venues where Upper Deck will be hosting a donation drive for Operation Gratitude is this year’s National. The first five “Million Pack March” cards will include Michael Jordan and be available during Wednesday’s VIP “Sneak Peek” Day, while the remaining five cards will be distributed on Friday and include the likes of David Robinson, LeBron James and Mike Modano.

2010 Las Vegas Industry Summit Promos

Maybe its just me, but I haven’t heard a lot out of the 2010 Las Vegas Summit thats going on this week.  If you could afford to attend, I guess industry leaders get together and talk about how to improve The Hobby.  Who knows if anything is getting done, but a few promos have hit the market that I’d like to share.

Photobucket

Otto Graham

Photobucket

Walter Payton

Each of these were provided to certain people as promos.  Both cards are numbered 1/1 and come encased with a Panini sticker across the top.

Photobucket

You can’t forget about Benchwarmers.  Who actually collects these other than overweight guys who have a 98% chance of appearing on an episode of Cops.

I also heard from Upper Deck that they provided a lot of memorabilia and Greats of the Game jersey sheets.  I’d sure like to see what they look like.

Dig Out Those Pro Set Cards

When I think of high-end cards, the last product that comes to mind is Pro Set.  Pro Set is one is one of those companies that made a set for every man, woman, and child on Earth.  They began producing cards at the very height of overproduction within the industry.  Despite making so many cards, there are a few valuable errors and promos that continue to sell for extremely high amounts of money.

Photobucket

Limited to 10,000 copies, this Vince Lombardi Trophy hologram can be found in packs of 1990 Pro Set.  To this day these can be found selling for $40.00 – $100.00 a piece.  It was rumored that some collectors would use small metal detectors to find these because each card contains a small amount of metal.  They also made a hologram of the Stanley Cup Trophy that sells for about $75.00.

Photobucket

Pro Set founder Ludwell Denny even had a card made that was given out for promotional purposes.  These have been known to sell for well over $150.00.

Photobucket

Who the hell is Gizmo Williams?  He played for the Eagles for a little bit, but then headed up to Canada.  In 2006 he was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.  He didn’t make that big of an impression with American Football, but his ’89 Pro Set card is still popular with collectors.  This error has the word “football” misspelled on the back and there is “no scouting” photo on the front.  These sell for over $70.00.

Photobucket

These I find to be the most interesting.  These cards were given to Pro Set executives explaining all of the variations, errors, and promos.  For not even having a player on them, they can easily bring in over $40.00.

Over Pro Set’s career in the trading card industry, they produced numerous errors, variations, and promos that still hold their value today.  The above cards are just some of Pro Set’s most valuable cards collectors keep their eyes open for.  It kinda makes you want to go through your old boxes checking for any variations or errors you might have overlooked.

Check out this seller’s completed auctions for a ton of rare Pro Set cards.

Meeting with TRISTAR President & CEO Jeff Rosenberg

On Tuesday morning I received an e-mail from TRISTAR that said the following:

Dear Valued Customer/Media Member,

As many of you already know, the 30th Annual National Sports Collectors Convention is quickly approaching.  Every year is special to us at TRISTAR because we like to bring you, as well as fans across the globe, the best autograph guest line-up to ever appear at the National each and every year.  But, this show is particularly eventfully for us, as we are debuting a new product on August 25th, TRISTAR Obak.  This set commemorates the 100th anniversary of the 1909 Obak Minor League Baseball cards as we pay homage to both the stars of yesterday and today.

But as a very important part of the baseball card industry, you will not have to wait until August 25th to see a special version of the set.  I would like to offer you some special National Obak promo cards that will be only available during the show to you.  In addition to this, we have a special autograph card or numbered TRISTAR card from our other products to extend as well.

To redeem your Obak promo cards and TRISTAR autograph/numbered card, you simply need to bring this email to the TRISTAR Booth near the autograph pavilion and tell us your name and blog/publication that you are with.

I am really looking forward to the biggest National Sports Collectors Convention that the industry has ever seen, and I truly hope to have the chance to talk you at our TRISTAR Booth just to make sure we are doing everything we can to make your lives a little easier and provide you with products that you can be excited about.  Have a great show!  See you in Cleveland !

Sincerely,

Jeff Rosenberg

President & CEO

TRISTAR Productions, Inc.

I printed out the above message and took it with me to the National.  As soon as the show opened, I went over to the TRISTAR booth and was able to meet with Jeff Rosenberg.  Mr. Rosenberg knew who I was and wanted to say how much he enjoys reading all the blogs collectors have started.  He couldn’t believe the power blogs have over the industry.  I bet we talked for 15-20 minutes about baseball, cards, and the hobby in general.  The whole time we talked he was putting together a display case full of memorabilia like a Babe Ruth autographed baseball, original pack of Obak cards from the early 1900’s, and the 1869 Peck & Snyder Cincinnati Red Stockings card he recently purchased.  I thought it was really cool meeting him, and I’m glad to see a manufacturer embracing the sports card blogosphere.

Photobucket

For stopping by to talk, Mr. Rosenberg gave me the above 8-card Obak set made for the National.

Photobucket

Photobucket

He also gave me the above mini Obak cards: Heyward, Stanton, Montero, Morrison, Matusz, Bumgarner, Freeman, Kelly, Taylor, Fuentes, Westmoreland, Grichuk, Jackson, and Obama.

Before leaving, I got Jeff Rosenberg to sign the e-mail he sent.

Pulls/Promos/Pickups at the ’09 National

One of my favorite things about the National are the promos provided by many of the manufacturers and various other dealers.  I obtained most of my promos from Press Pass and Panini, but did pick up a few from Razor and Dave & Adams.  In addition to the promos below, I also received everything that was stated to be in the VIP package.  Click on each photo for a closer look.

Photobucket

Razor Promo Set – Rich Franklin, The Kardashian Sisters, Donovan Tate, Johnny Chan, and an ’08 Razor Metal Michel Inoa.

Photobucket

These are all promos from D & A, Press Pass, and Razor – Aaron Hicks ’08 Metal Plate, Brett Wallace Freedom Cardboard, Tim Beckham Freedom Cardboard, David Cooper Freedom Cardboard, LeSean McCoy ’09 Press Pass Legends #’ed/5, and I pulled a Red Ink auto of Ozzie Newsome as a promo from Press Pass

Photobucket

More promos from Press Pass & Panini – Matthew Stafford ’09 Score Atomic #’ed/50, Matthew Stafford ’09 Elite #’ed/499, Jeremy Maclin ’09 Elite #’ed/499, Michael Crabtree ’09 Elite #’ed/499 and a Tom Jackson Press Pass Legends #’ed/5

Photobucket

I pulled some really nice low-numbered cards at the National while obtaining some of the promos.  Everyone got excited at the Press Pass booth when I pulled this Mike Alstott signed printing plate #’ed 1/1.  This is the second 1/1 I’ve pulled during a National.  I also picked up an Elston Howard 2000 UD Yankees Legends jersey and a Lou Gehrig ’07 UD SP Legendary Cuts 1 of 1 filmstrip piece.
