“Pin-Up” of the Week: Sammy Sosa 2005 Baltimore Orioles 600 HR’s Error Pin

Nobody could possible forget that 1998 baseball season where Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa were battling it out to break Roger Maris’s single season home run record.  Too bad it was all ruined by the steroid and performance enhancer controversy.  In 2005, Sosa played for the Orioles and fans were hoping to see him hit his 600th career home run in 2006.  That’s why these pins were printed up ahead of time.  Do to one of his worst seasons since 1992, the Orioles decided not to bring him back in 2006.

The error isn’t that Sosa didn’t make it 600 home runs, the error was that he didn’t do it while playing with the Orioles.  Sosa hit his 600th career home run in June, 2007 while playing for the Rangers.

Twelve Years Ago Tonight………………….

Twelve years ago tonight Mark McGwire passed Roger Maris as the single season home run king.  Bonds now holds that record, but 1998 was a great season for baseball.  Too bad that it all had to get ruined by steroids.

Back in ’98 the card below was on fire!  This thing went through the roof, and today it can be found for a few bucks.  Even though both McGwire’s and Sosa’s rookies are barely worth anything, their autographs are in high demand.

Ok lets here it.  How many of you purchased one of these during that season?

The Official Booklet From Hell

After Mark McGwire announced yesterday that he used steroids for 10 years including when he broke Roger Maris’s single season home run record back in 1998, I couldn’t help but think about this little piece of memorabilia I have sitting in a dark corner.  This Sammy Sosa / Mark McGwire dual gold card booklet commemorating that once magical season was produced by the Danbury Mint.  When I first started collecting back then I thought these gold cards were the greatest thing in the world.  I have a Mantle 1952 Topps Gold reprint and a Ruth too.  These gold cards aren’t worth very much to collectors today and can easily be found for a few dollars.  You could say this is the official booklet from hell.  I think you’ed be happier with a booklet of a terrible rookie filled with plain white swatches versus this thing.
