2011 Panini Gold Standard Football Box Break & Review

Design: Photobucket

Panini’s obsession with foil actually looks nice in this set.  In fact, when looking at some of the cards you can see a slight 3D effect.  I’m glad Panini decided to use thick card stock for the base set, and not that flimsy stuff we’re all use to seeing.

I think its great that Panini decided to include (1) on-card autograph within each box.  Some collectors aren’t fond of the black box and silver ink used for the signatures, but I think it looks good.  I would suggest to Panini that they try a different type of ink next time because some of these signatures ended up getting smudged.  Paint pens can do this a lot.

I also think the Gold Leaf Rookies slightly resemble the relic cards from 2002 Playoff Pieces of the Game.  What do you think?

Price: Photobucket

Gold Standard isn’t for the casual collector.  Boxes are currently selling for $200.00.

“Hit” Quality: Photobucket

Boxes will pack (5) “hits”.  Collectors can look for cards containing pieces of gold and diamonds.  I wish they would have made a Super Bowl card that contained diamonds commemorating the Miami Dolphins Perfect Season.

I pulled the following:

Auto/Relic

  • Torrey Smith 2-color patch/on-card auto RC #’ed/525
  • Alex Green Gold Leaf Rookies jersey/auto RC #’ed/50
  • Brandon Lloyd Golden Anniversary auto/14k gold piece #’ed/10
Relic
  • Ryan Williams Gold Leaf Rookies Jersey #’ed/299
  • Jake Locker Gold Leaf Rookies Jersey #’ed/299
Parallel
  • Nnamdi Asomugha parallel #’ed/25
Base
  • Wes Welker #’ed/299
  • Justin Houstin RC #’ed/299
  • Deacon Jones Legends #’ed/299
  • Lee Evans Golden Anniversary #’ed/299
  • Peyton Hillis Gold Rush #’ed/299
  • Franco Harris Golden Age #’ed/299
Overall: Photobucket
Overall, I give 2011 Gold Standard Football 3 gold bars out of 5 (1=poor & 5=perfect).  I enjoy a product that has high-quality base cards and a handful of “hits”.  The gold bar box design is cool too.  Its always nice to see a product come packed in something different, yet isn’t over the top.  Panini has to use a different ink type on those on-card autographs though.  If you’ve got the money, give it a shot.  It was a fun and quick thrill.
