Mystery No More – Manziel Is Leaf’s Surprise

Its no longer a mystery.  Johnny Manziel or “Johnny Football” is the subject matter on the mystery art/cut signature card that has had collectors scratching their heads ever since the release of 2013 Leaf Metal Football and 2013 Leaf Valiant Football.  There was quite a bit of speculation that this mystery redemption was going to be of Manziel, but today it was all confirmed by Leaf.  Each one of those redemption cards is good for one of these very early cards of the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner.  They all come certified by PSA/DNA and are encased in a BGS holder.  Leaf is one of my favorite manufacturers because they aren’t afraid to push the envelope and try something new.  I wouldn’t mind seeing more art/cut signature cards in the future, especially of deceased players.

Leaf CEO, Brian Gray, mentioned that he recently purchased a Bear Bryant jacket from Heritage Auctions.  He didn’t say if it was for his personal collection or for use in a future product.  An all Alabama product wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility.  Last year Leaf released Lombardi Legacy and it didn’t contain one Green Bay Packers logo.

I don’t think they look too bad, considering all the legalities they probably had to work through in order to make them.

Valiant Football Is Coming

Photobucket

It looks as if Leaf will be producing Valiant Football this year.  Just like Valiant Baseball, the football version will be made using that classic Crusade design from the 90’s.  Each box will contain (4) autographed cards.  You can also look for randomly inserted U.S. Army All-American High School signatures as well.  These would include players such as Barry Sanders, Jr, Gunner Kiel, and Andrew Luck.  I think these might be some of the best looking non-licensed football cards this year.

Gray Announces Drastic Changes To ’11 Leaf Valiant Baseball Draft

Brian Gray of Leaf Trading Cards announced some drastic changes to one of the year’s most anticipated releases – 2011 Leaf Valiant Baseball Draft.  This unlicensed product will be bringing back the popular Crusade insert design that came about during the 90’s.

Gray’s announcement:

“Greetings…. I am very pleased to announce substantial changes to an upcoming product which I am certain will add significant value and further reduce an already limited edition product to ensure collectability.

2011 Leaf Valiant Baseball Draft

This product releases the first week of November. We are already expecting a stong market for this product given the huge demand for this technology (which the hobby has been asking for for 13 years and no one has been able to deliver until now!). However, given market conditions and in an effort to reward those who have already ordered:

1> WE ARE INCREASING THE CONTENT FROM 8 ON-CARD AUTOGRAPHS PER BOX TO 10 ON-CARD AUTOGRAPHS PER BOX (25% more autographs!!!)

2> WE ARE REDUCING THE NUMBER OF CASES MADE FROM 400 CASES TO 320 CASES (A 20% CUT IN PRODUCTION!!!!!)

3> Across the print run, this makes the ratio of ICHIRO SUZUKI ON-CARD AUTOGRAPHS 1:3 CASES (rahter than 1 in 4).

Factory cost will remain the same, thus provding great additional value for both our dealers and their customers.

WE ARE SOLD OUT OF THIS ITEM AND WILL BE UNABLE TO FILL ADDITIONAL REQUESTS. ALL ORDERS THAT WERE ALLOCATED DOWN ,CUT OR REDUCED TO MEET THIS LOWER QUANTITY HAVE ALREAYD BEEN NOTIFIED, OTHERWISE YOUR ORDER IS CONFIRMED IF ALREADY RECEIVED!

THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT. BG”

By increasing the content and decreasing case production, this product should really carry some value.  Combine all this with one of the most popular designs from the 90’s and Ichiro, its almost unstoppable.  If Leaf ever got an MLB, NFL, NBA, or NHL license, the other manufacturers would be in serious trouble.  Gray truly listens to collectors.

Sneak Peak: Ichiro’s Leaf Valiant Signatures

Take a look at these brand new Ichiro Leaf Valiant autographs.  They look absolutely amazing.  Combining the classic Crusade design from the 90’s with Ichiro is just pure genius.  Ichiro hasn’t had a new autographed card for quite sometime.  This is the way unlicensed products should be done.

Brian Gray is doing a fantastic job over at Leaf.  He has proven that unlicensed products can be very successful, especially when you listen to your customers.  When you have an unlicensed product you shouldn’t release it like you would with a licensed one.  For it to be successful, you have to have an element to it that sets it apart from any other product.  Team logos aren’t everything.
