Product Highlight: 2002 Upper Deck SP Legendary Cuts Football

Baseball is the first sport that comes to mind whenever you think about Upper Deck’s SP Legendary Cuts brand.

Upper Deck SP Legendary Cuts quickly became a fan favorite with baseball collectors after it’s initial release in 2001.

Naturally, Upper Deck thought this success could transfer over to other sports.

In 2002, Upper Deck released SP Legendary Cuts Football.

The base set consists of (210) cards.

Cards #1-90 are what I refer to as normal base.

Cards #91-100 are called Victory March, and are serial numbered to 2,500 copies.

Cards #101-110 are called Titans of the Gridiron, and are serial numbered to 1,500 copies.

Cards #111-120 are called Road To Immortality, and are serial numbered to 800 copies.

Cards #121-150 are called Destined for Glory, and feature rookie cards serial numbered to 500 copies.

Cards #151-210 are called Destined for Glory, and feature rookie cards serial numbered to 1,100 copies.

A single hobby box should yield two hits.

Hits come in the form of Rookie Recruits Jerseys.

Rookie Recruits Jerseys Gold #’ed/75.

SP Classic Threads #’ed/350.

SP Classic Threads Gold #’ed/75.

Autograph Cuts that vary in serial numbering from 1 to 240.

Unlike it’s baseball counterpart, SP Legendary Cuts Football wasn’t received by the hobby quite as well.

I think it has a lot to do with the checklist. The base set is filled with rookies and veterans who were still playing at the time of this product’s release.

With a few exceptions from the SP Classic Threads and SP Classic Threads Gold #’ed/75 sets such as Dan Marino, John Elway, and Walter Payton, most of the retired legends are limited to the Autograph Cuts.

A majority of the players in the Autograph Cuts set should have had cards in the base set.

The Autograph Cuts are difficult cards to pull. The average collector won’t find one. Retired players is what made SP Legendary Cuts a popular brand. Limiting those players to the rare pulls didn’t help this product.

If you didn’t find an Autograph Cuts card in your box it was hard to believe this set was part of the SP Legendary Cuts family.
